The Battle of Leyte Gulf

Pacific Thunder Campaign cycle 12 includes the month October 1944. This month is memorable for the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the last and greatest major naval engagement of the Pacific War. The naval battle took place October 23 to 25, 1944, and resulted in near destruction of the Japanese Navy. Its aftermath witnessed the rise of a new and deadly phase of World War II air operations, the suicide attack.

Dr. Kenneth I. Friedman, author of Afternoon of the Rising Sun: The Battle of Leyte Gulf, has an excellent article about this landmark naval battle available for download in pdf format: The Battle of Leyte Gulf.

Two American submarines had a significant role in the naval engagement: USS Darter (SS-227) and USS Dace (SS-247).
