Silent Hunter 4 Mods & Tools

PTC 8 Cycles Mod

Posted by Ed Howard.

This mod changes the start dates for the American Career patrols in Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific Version 1.5. It provides fifteen individual patrol start dates, which correspond with the fifteen historical periods traditionally used in the Pacific Thunder Campaign. These cycle dates are as follows:

Cycle 1 - Dec 41/Jan & Feb 42
Cycle 2 - Mar/Apr/May 42
Cycle 3 - June/Jul/Aug 42
Cycle 4 - Sep/Oct/Nov 42
Cycle 5 - Dec 42/Jan & Feb 43
Cycle 6 - Mar/Apr/May 43
Cycle 7 - Jun/Jul/Aug 43
Cycle 8 - Sep/Oct/Nov 43
Cycle 9 - Dec 43/Jan & Feb 44
Cycle 10 - Mar/Apr/May 44
Cycle 11 - June/Jul/Aug 44
Cycle 12 - Sep/Oct/Nov 44
Cycle 13 - Dec 44/Jan & Feb 45
Cycle 14 - Mar/Apr/May 45
Cycle 15 - Jun/Jul/Aug 45

This mod is designed specifically for use in the Silent Hunter Pacific Thunder Campaign, and requires a clean (i.e., unmodded), stock install of Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific, Version 1.5.

The mod changes only two files in your Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific game directory:

Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific/Data/UPCData/UPCCampaignData/CareerStart.upc
Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific/Data/UPCData/UPCCampaignData/Flotillas.upc

If you have any other mods installed that affect the above files or any linked files, you will experience CTDs.

Please post any bug reports on the SubSoWesPac Silent Hunter 4 Forum or at the Pacific Thunder Campaign Yahoo discussion group.

I wish to thank Art Anker for his kind assistance and advice.

The mod is v1.5 and JSGME friendly.

Silent Hunter 4 Go to Battle Stations Keyboard Shortcut

Recommended by Ed Howard. This keyboard shortcut allows you to toggle Battle Stations on and off using the Shift + B keys. It makes one change to the file 'commands.cfg'. On my system, the path to it is:

c:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific\Data\Cfg\Commands.cfg

To make the change manually, using Notepad open the file and scroll down to the following section:

[Cmd436]
Name=Toggle_battle-stations
Ctxt=1

Edit it to read as follows (and of course save it):

[Cmd436]
Name=Toggle_battle_stations
Ctxt=1
Key0=0x42,s,"SHIFT B"

Now all you have to do is press Shift + B to toggle Battle Stations on/off.

Alternatively, you can download the following file which contains the modification. The archive file is v1.5 and JSGME friendly.

Silent Hunter 4 Generic Mod Enabler

Recommended by Jeff Johnson. The JoneSoft Generic Mod Enabler (version 1.5.0 - 3 February 2007 - 604KB) takes most of the hassle out of installing and uninstalling mods for your games. It has been tested on many games, including Silent Hunter III and Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific, and should work with any moddable game.

The Mod Enabler is designed to be installed in the root folder of the game that you wish to mod. Before installing it, you should ensure that you have a clean, unmodded installation of your game, preferably with the latest patches installed.

For more information about the JoneSoft Generic Mod Enabler, to view a screenshot of it, and to download it, visit the JonesSoft Web site.

Intercept Calculator

Recommended by Ed Howard. This small freeware utility, created by David Sandberg, can calculate optimal intercept solutions for any target for which you can supply distance, heading, bearing and speed information. This can be used to determine both weapon and vessel intercepts. It will install and run in Windows XP and Windows Vista. You can keep it minimized in the system tray and use ALT + TAB to minimize Silent Hunter 4 whenever you need to do some quick calculations.

Radar Plotting Grid

Recommended by Ed Howard. This is a "pdf" file of a radar plotting grid template you can use while on patrol in Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific. It was created by Matthew Schowengerot.

Kim Ronhof's Electronic Cipher Officer (ECOPTC)

Recommended by Ed Howard and Don Reed. The ECOPTC program converts plain text messages into enciphered text and deciphers enciphered messages. It uses a simulation of the coding machine used on US submarines in World War II. Some of our members enjoy posting enciphered status reports about their Silent Hunter 4 patrols on our forum. It adds an additional degree of realism to your Silent Hunter 4 adventures. The program will install and run in Windows XP and Windows Vista.

SubSoWesPac Air Strike Mod

Recommended by Ed Howard. My biggest complaint about Silent Hunter 4's enemy airstrike configuration is that there are too many night attacks. While Japan did have competent night fighters in its arsenal, they were principally used as interceptors. In all my years of playing the original Silent Hunter, I did not ever come under attack by an enemy airplane at night and I do not recall reading about night attacks against U.S boats in the Pacific by Japanese aircraft.

I have made my own modification to the game's "AirStrike.cfg" file. The sole change reduces the Night Strike Probability by 90% to 0.005, from the default value of 0.05. There are no other changes. All other values are unchanged - they are the same as the ones in the un-modded Silent Hunter 4. On my system, the AirStrike.cfg file is located at the following path

c:\Program Files\Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific\Data\Cfg\AirStrike.cfg

The file is v1.5 and JSGME friendly.
