The Russo-Japanese war culminated in a stunning naval defeat for the Russian Empire. In May 1905, Japanese Admiral Togo intercepted what was left of the Russian fleet in the Tsushima Strait between Korea and Japan. In the ensuing Battle of Tsushima, the Japanese fleet, numerically inferior but with superior speed and firing range, shelled the Russian fleet mercilessly, destroying all eight of its battleships. The historic naval battles of the Russo-Japanese War is the setting for the naval strategy computer game Distant Guns, developed by Storm Eagle Studios. Distant Guns, has received The Wargamer Award for Excellence as one of the best gaming titles this year. The January 2006 edition of Games for Windows Magazine gave the game a 7 out 10 (Good) rating. The positive 411 is for "Great rendering of a great historical period." The negative is "Much more watching than playing." The 3D rendering allows you to watch the battle from above or zoom in on your own ships. The user interface is unorthodox compared to typical war gaming classics, but is easy to master. Yet the pace is incredibly slow, as is the case for most historical naval simulations. Distant Guns is available for a free 30-Day Trial with 1 scenario unlocked. It can be downloaded at the Storm Eagle Studios Web site. If you like it you'll have to part with a hefty $65 to unlock the full version. Distant Guns is not available at brick and mortar retailers - E-tail at the Storm Eagle Site is the only way to get it. System requirements:
