USS Scorpion (SS-278)

The USS Scorpion (SS-278) went missing sometime after January 5, 1944. She was last seen on that date, when she attempted to transfer an injured crewman to the USS Herring (SS-233). Heavy seas prevented the transfer, so both boats parted ways - the Herring bound for Midway and the Scorpion en route her assigned patrol area in the Yellow Sea. That night the Scorpion sent a radio dispatch to Pearl stating everything was under control. It was the last message ever received from the Gato-class submarine. No conclusive evidence of the cause for her loss has ever been found. Most sources opine she probably struck a mine in the entrance to the Yellow Sea sometime between January 5 and February 24, 1944. The Scorpion earned three battle stars for her World War II service.
