Silversides

To The Rescue

On May 30, 1945, USS Silversides (SS-236) departed Pearl Harbor for her fourteenth war patrol. She was captained by Commander John Culver Nichols. His operation order directed him to assume a lifeguard station in Patrol Area 6 in support of air strikes on Honshu, Japan. On July 22, she rescued a downed USAAF P-51 fighter pilot and two days later saved a downed USNR F6F pilot. The Navy pilot was from the aircraft carrier Independence (CV-22). On July 30, she moored her port side next to USS Tirante (SS-420) in the nest alongside the starboard side of tender USS Sperry, at Apra Harbor, Guam. She was undergoing refit there when the end of hostilities was announced on August 15, 1945.
