Silent Hunter

Commander's Edition

The Silent Hunter Commander's Edition submarine combat simulator was developed by Aeon Electronic Entertainment and published by Strategic Simulations in 1997. It represented the final version of the original simulator, which was published in 1996. The Commander's Edition included all patches issued for the original Silent Hunter (version 1.0) plus some additional patrol zones and a scenario editor. The simulator was made for MS-DOS and Windows 3.1. Users soon found it was also possible to run it in Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me. In October 2000, Ubi Soft published the Commander's Edition in its "Super Savings Series." This issuance sold out very quickly resulting in a sharp increase in the price for the limited supply left in the marketplace. Most American submarine simulation enthusiasts consider it the best of the early Pacific theater submarine simulators. The involvement of World War II submarine commander William P. "Bud" Gruner, captain of the USS Skate (SS-305), in its design helped to make it a very realistic simulation. You can also gain new insights into submarine tactics and operations from the sixteen video interviews with Bud Gruner included in the simulator. On my Silent Hunter Commander's Edition webpage you will find a large assortment of tools, editors, utilities, and mods for this venerable submarine simulator. You will also find an article that will show you how to get it up and running in Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 (32x and 64x) using DOSBox.
