After reading Douglas E. Campbell’s new book USS Dorado (SS-248): On Eternal Patrol, I discovered so much new information I just had to re-write my article on the Dorado. There are not many other books out there about this submarine’s mysterious loss. (Come to think about it, I don’t think there are any!)
I especially enjoyed reading the full reports on her loss by the Court of Inquiry and the earlier Board of Investigation. The latter was conducted at the Guantanamo Naval Air Station. The Navy PBY-3 fly boys sure circled the wagons there! They should have titled that section of the report “How to Turn a Gato-class Submarine Into a U-boat.” You can just feel the conspiracy brewing as you read it.
