First American Submarine Lost In World War II

On December 10, 1941, the USS Sealion (SS-195) was moored at the Cavite Navy Yard near Manila undergoing an overhaul. That day Japanese naval aircraft flying from Formosa attacked the facility and made two direct bomb hits on the Sealion. Four of her crew members were killed. The bombs caused extensive internal and external damage and left the Sealion totally crippled. She was destroyed to prevent her use by the enemy. Her commanding officer was Lieutenant Commander Richard G. Voge. She became the first American submarine lost in World War II.
