There is one sentence in the Navy’s report of the USS Trigger’s final patrol found in U.S. Submarine Losses World War II that has puzzled me for quite some time. The last sentence in the sixth paragraph of the report says “To clarify the situation for the other submarines, TRIGGER was given another assignment and told to acknowledge, and the wolfpack was disbanded on 30 March [1945].” What has bothered me is what the “assignment” was. Where did ComSubPac intend to send the Trigger and what was her mission? None of the usual sources provided any clues. After much research yielded no answers, I resolved this would remain a mystery on Eternal Patrol with Trigger and her eighty-nine loyal submariners. But last night I found the answer in the last place I would have expected to find it. It all makes sense though when you consider the geographic area she was in. Somehow I also sense destiny at work here. I have updated my article on the Trigger with this new information.
