Can Silent Hunter be played online? No, Silent Hunter is not a multiplayer online game. It is a standalone software application that you install on your computer's hard disk. You play against the program's artificial intelligence as modified by some creative utilities available for free at Hawk's Silent Hunter Utilities Web Site. Silent Hunter is not capable of online competition via the internet. However, as a Pacific Thunder Campaign participant, you will be a member of an established online community. You will receive patrol orders by email, and submit your patrol reports by email.

What Silent Hunter version do I need? The Silent Hunter Commander's Edition is the standard for the Pacific Thunder Campaign. In early 2002, Ubi Soft re-published the Silent Hunter Commander's Edition.  It is available for purchase at our Store and at various other retail locations.

Do I have to be knowledgeable about World War 2 submarine operations? No, but after you join the campaign and begin to interact with other community members, your knowledge will grow. You will find many talented and knowledgeable members in this online community. Most members are or become avid readers of books about World War 2 Pacific Theater submarine operations. You will also receive war patrol orders and other communiques that are carefully researched and historically accurate. If you ever have a question about Pacific Theater submarine operations, just ask another member.

How do I communicate with other Pacific Thunder Campaign members? We use a Yahoo discussion group as the official communications network for the Pacific Thunder Campaign. You can join the group at this link.

What is the overall mission of the Pacific Thunder Campaign? The objective of the Pacific Thunder Campaign - besides having fun - is to recreate the events of the submarine war in the Pacific as historically and as accurately as Silent Hunter will allow. Realizing that there are certain limitations within this simulation, we continuously endeavor at every opportunity to emulate tactics, methods and procedures employed by a WW II U.S. submarine commander. High tonnage scores are not the goal of the individual skipper. We at all times strive to reach the highest level and degree of faithful adherence to the accurate execution of a submarine combat patrol.

What is the purpose of the Pacific Thunder Campaign Submarine School? The purpose of the Submarine School is not to teach Silent Hunter gaming techniques, rather it is to assist new skippers in assimilating their own personal game play styles into the campaign as well as ensuring a full understanding and appreciation of the campaign's Rules of Engagement and goals, and the methods developed for achieving them. The school was developed by a former U.S. submarine officer who brings a wealth of knowledge and realism to the campaign.

What crew experience level should I use? The crew experience level to be used depends on whether this is your first command, like when you first graduate sub school, or a new command, like a new boat assignment after your first four patrols or a new boat assignment after being sunk or captured. Please see our Rules of Engagement and Standard Operating Procedures for more detail.

How often do we play? We conduct one war patrol per month. Each patrol cycle runs from the 1st of the month through the last day of the month. Each patrol cycle month covers three historical months. Please see our campaign patrol cycle calendar.

I don't think my personal schedule will allow me to conduct a patrol every month. We're very flexible and we can accommodate individual scheduling needs.

What's a SubRon? SubRon is a military abbreviation for Submarine Squadron. During WW II a squadron (SubRon) consisted of two or more divisions of six submarines. The submarine fleets (SubLant, SubPac, SubSoWesPac) were made up of several squadrons.
