Ever since we came up with the idea to start this forum, Jeff Johnson and I have been like two kids impatiently awaiting the sunrise on Christmas Eve.  Frankly, we are both suprised by the overall lack of interest within the Pacific Thunder community in the latest addition to the Silent Hunter franchise.  Yet despite the hesitancy voiced over issues ranging from copy protection to foreign development, we are determined to proceed at flank speed, by ourselves if necessary, to explore and enjoy Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific as much as possible.  It is important to note the pre-reviews to date have consistently addressed and sublated the community's concerns.

The mission of the Silent Hunter 4 Squadron is to:

  • Provide a community and forum where Silent Hunter 4 skippers can make friends, discuss the new simulation, and share their experiences, patrols, tactics, and tips.
  • Organize and facilitate online matches between submarine and destroyer commanders using Silent Hunter 4's online capabilities.
  • Encourage and promote the development of mods, applications and utilities to enhance and improve Silent Hunter 4.  Thanks to the efforts of Jason "Hawk" Busby, Kim Ronhof, Jerry Calenberg, Don Wells, Jeff Johnson, and others, the Pacific Thunder community has compiled an extensive list of mods, tools, utilities, custom missions, and applications for the original Silent Hunter.  Jeff and I intend to encourage and promote the same degree of innovation for Silent Hunter 4.  Jeff said he intends to use his talents and expertise in designing custom missions for the original Silent Hunter (visit Ships of War) to develop custom missions for Silent Hunter 4.
  • Facilitate discussion about American submarine operations in the Pacific during World War II.
  • Have fun!

To accomplish the above mission statements, we have established the following policies, rules and regulations:

  • There are no policies, rules and regulations.
  • Upon joining, you are required to have fun, play Silent Hunter 4, and conduct unrestricted submarine warfare against any enemy asset bearing the rising sun flag, crest, standard or emblem; there is no warship restriction list - if it floats, sink it.
  • The only goals and objectives you will receive will be from the game's interface.
  • Our only request is that you share your patrol results and experiences on the forum.
  • No one will ever second-guess or criticize you, or count your unused torpedoes.
  • You play at your rate and convenience; there are no schedules or cycles.

If you would like to join the Silent Hunter 4 Squadron, all you have to do is register for an account on this forum, activate it via the email message you will receive, and then stop by the forum Ward Room and introduce yourself.  The war begins as soon as you install Silent Hunter 4.

On behalf of Jeff and myself, Welcome Aboard!  Now go forth and 'Find 'Em, Chase 'Em, Sink 'Em.

Good Hunting!

Pacific Thunder - The Silent Hunter Campaign

We go to sea on diesel boats, they call us bubblehead.
Our blood is laced with diesel smoke, we’re sailors to the end.
Our diesels wind thru the salty brine until we take her deep.
Then we turn her loose on battery juice and we all go to sleep.
Diesel boats forever, hear the diving claxon sound.
Diesel boats forever, take her deep, take her down.

I don't think it is a lack of interest.  I am excited.  Although I will get SH IV for sure I plan to read the forums first to see what the recommended mods are and wait to see if there is a patch.  Also want to weigh the pro's and con's of the downloadable version because it might be best for my situation.

Hmmm a clear Jap sign - Fire 1 --- Fire 2  Grin

But Ed its a Great idea. Im all in. Should we use one of the real WWII patrolreports as a "standard" of how to report back ??

Example : USS Tang's 4th warpatrol http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/1592/tang4.htm

Welcome aboard Mav.  I'm all in favor of using the Wahoo's report as a go-by.  What about the rest of you guys?

Thanks - im looking forward to see how the SH online community is. I have been in the wunderfull world of Falcon4.0 since 1998 - more specificaly in 87th Stray Dogs. Still going strong there, but my Sub-love has never faded.

And Wahoo's is fine with me. I was more referencing to the contains and level of detail.

Mav,

My bad...the patrol report in your link is for the Tang.  Nevertheless, I think the general format is great.  It's simiilar to what is used in the Pacific Thunder Campaign.  The guys can use it as a go-by, and include as much detail as they want.  Real world commitments being what they are, some guys will be able to include a lot of information and others will only have time to do less.  Either way, the idea is to have fun and to get familiar with the new game.  From what I've been reading, I think it won't be as easy to sink warships or merchants in Silent Hunter 4 as it is in Silent Hunter Commander's Edition.

Bite your tougue, Ed. When I get through the Japanese won't know what hit them. They'll think the Americans are using wolfpacks three years early.   Grin

I am keen to come on board with the proviso I will not have a lot of time to actually play. I happy to be a social member and discuss tips and tactics and history etc. That doesnt mean I wont do the odd mission and can file a report. I have literally dusted off Kim's tools as I do enjoy using manual TDC and working out intercepts etc.

I have managed to sort my order problem and hopefully will get my tin box full of goodies not long after you guys. Next expense will be beefing up my computer. Currently own a P4 2.4Ghz with 1Gig ram and an Nvidia Ti4600 with 128 ram. I hope SH4 will run OK. I know Iwill have to turn down some of the features with those specs. Time will tell.

Great news Peter!  I'm glad you are with us.  Play and discuss whenever you can.  We have no rules or guidelines other than to have fun and make new friends!  Your experience in "tuning" your setup for Silent Hunter 4 may be of help to others.
